Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader (D-NV), and a group of impressive speakers populated the morning panel at the Clean Energy Summit at UNLV earlier this week, entitled National Clean Energy Summit 3.0: Investing in American Jobs.

As moderator John Podesta said, this was about "trying to unleash the capital that's sitting on the sidelines," adding that the "potential in the sustainable energy market could revive the stalled economy and end the recession."

The ultimate goal for any consumer offering--and the goal that will frame the remaining nine rules--is to build a brand. If your brand becomes synonymous with a particular category (e.g. books for Amazon, DVDs for Netflix) you gain tremendous leverage in your marketing spend. But exactly how you build a brand has changed a lot in the last decade.

One good thing to come out of MySpace’s slow demise: a bunch of former employees are creating startups left and right, mostly in Los Angeles and helping to grow the startup ecosystem there.

This morning’s somewhat vague statement by Apple on updates to it’s developer agreement brought a flurry of questions. Did Apple just allow Flash-powered Apps into the App ecosystem? Will third-party anlaytics companies like Flurry still be blocked? And one important question—did Apple rescind its terms that effectively prevented ad networks that are owned by a device or OS manufacturer (ie Google’s AdMob) from serving ads on iOS devices?

Zynga has been taking it on the chin from the SF Weekly the last few weeks. First there was a four part series about some stickers that Zynga’s ad agency put on the streets of San Francisco – lame but not exactly Third Reicht territory. But the last two days the newspaper has focused on Zynga’s penchant for stealing game ideas from other companies. FarmVille, FishVille, PetVille, Café World, and Mafia Wars were all copies of other company’s games.

Amie Street is one of those startups that just got me – love at first site if you will. I first discovered them in 2006, calling it an awesome new music model. Artists upload songs and those songs are free to download to start. As more downloads occur the price goes up. A cent, fifty cents, etc., up to $1.

The price of the song is an indication of how good it is, as friends share the good stuff with others.

I’ve had a post in my head for months – maybe longer – about the role of a CEO.   It originally appeared on TechCrunch as a guest post but just in case you missed it there.  My primary role was “chief psychologist” and as I’ve learned over the past few years the same has been true as a VC.  Both are basically people businesses.

MySpace is adding a new feature today that allows users to embed video streams within their activity streams. Powered by Redux, videos are seen directly within an activity stream and instantly plays video that you or a friend has shared, selected as a favorite, uploaded, and rated from your Stream.

The actual player will show a real-time stream of MySpace videos based on what their friends are sharing and what’s trending on MySpace. The player will also include comments from friends that scroll/change. And users can also see which friend posted the content.

I'm not sure what to make of the company I just interviewed -- New Energy Technologies (OTC BB: NENE.OB).  And more broadly, I wonder what thinly traded, small-market-cap, over-the-counter traded stocks can add to the advancement of renewable energy markets. For context, Investopedia explains Over-The-Counter (OTC) stocks:

Apparently some Miami writers think that Ohio Stadium is not that loud and some Miami players think that “Everybody wants to come see us. They ainâ™t coming just to see Ohio State.â Yes that is correct, everyone will want to see the Miami Hurricanes, like they want to see a turkey on Thanksgiving or crabs in a crab boil — fully cooked, dismembered, bits of skeleton lying around. EDSBS’s take on stadium loudness.

Earlier today AT&T sent out a “Special Message From AT&T” email highlighting a 18-19 billion dollar investment in their network as well as plans for other improvements. The email provides a link to their Facebook page an avalanche of comments like this cropped up:

Craigslist has self-censored its Adult Services section in the US (instead of its usual location the word “Censored” appears and the section is no longer accessible).  There has been a lot of discussion of this move already.  Two pieces in particular are worth reading.  Jeff Jarvis points out that one of the reasons why Craigslist is under attack (and possibly the main reason) is just how disruptive it is

Apparently some of Digg’s employees aren’t super happy that their main source of news about Digg is TechCrunch – probably referring to the news that VP of Engineering John Quinn is out.

Digg Designer Danny Trinh Twitters “I love finding out about @digg company news via @techcrunch. Wonder if they’ll post our lunch menu too..”

Yes, we will.

There is no shortage of gift card marketplaces on the web, with startups like Cardpool, Gift Card Rescue, and Plastic Jungle all promising to rescue your unused credits or sell discounted cards. However, these sites typically require buyers to wait several days for the physical arrival of their gift cards, frustrating users who want to use credits immediately for online purchases.

I was thumbing through Twitter messages on my Blackberry on Monday (I use Twitter as a “mobile first, web second” product) when I saw the following Tweet (see graphic).

I resisted the temptation to jump in with a response because I knew it was too complicated of a topic to discuss on Twitter.  But I thought I should do a quick post on the topic.
